Co-Q10 |
|
| |
Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is an extremely important nutrient that every cell in your body must have in order to produce energy. A study conducted in Japan Tohoku University School of Medicine over a 3 year period found that CoQ10 therapy prevented progressive hearing loss in the 50 subjects that participated in the study, and there were no side effects during the therapy
Another interesting study by Sato (1988) found CoQ10 to be effective in promoting the recovery of damaged auditory hairs and in preventing respiratory metabolic impairment of the hair cells caused by hypoxia.

L-Carnitine |
|
| |
Carnitine is an amino acid recognized as an effective antiaging therapy to maintain youthful cellular energy metabolism. However, the results of a study suggest that carnitine can have beneficial effects on the central neuropathy associated with diabetes (Yildiz et al. 1996). The diabetes-induced brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) deficits were improved after carnitine treatment. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is the preferential form of carnitine because of its superior absorption. A daily dose of 1000-2000 mg is suggested |

Vinpocetine (periwinkle) |
|
| |
One double-blind study found that high amounts of vinpocetine (60 mg per day) could have a beneficial effect on hearing loss due to aging (presbyacusis). A preliminary study concluded that supplementation with ethyl-apovincaminate (a vinca alkaloid) may reduce symptoms of tinnitus (ringing in the ears) due to impaired blood flow to the inner ear. One review of the use of vinpocetine in people who have suffered strokes found that the only double-blind study did not show efficacy, though previous uncontrolled studies have suggested there might be a benefit.

Alpha Lipoic Acid |
|
| |
There is experimental evidence for the potential usefulness of lipoic acid in conditions leading to hearing loss. Llipoic acid, both topically and orally, has been shown to afford protection against hearing loss. There is also data to show that lipoic acid can improve hearing in aging and also reduce some of the effects of aging by upregulating mitochondrial function . |
