COX-2 Inhibitors

COX-2 inhibitors are a new class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for preventing inflammation. COX-2 inhibitor represents a significant advancement in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatment for pain. COX-2 inhibitors have been found to be equally as effective as more traditional NSAIDs. Some of the COX-2 inhibitors are naprosyn, diclofenac and ibuprofen.

The COX-2 inhibitors block the COX-2 enzyme, which in turn impedes the production of the chemical messengers or prostaglandins that cause the pain and swelling of arthritis inflammation. These drugs are uniquely different from traditional NSAIDs because they selectively block the COX-2 enzyme and not the COX-1 enzyme.

The enzyme COX-2, produce prostaglandins, which acts as the active chemical messenger molecules. But the COX-2 enzyme is located specifically in areas of the body that are responsible for inflammation. The COX-2 enzymes are not present in the stomach. When the COX-2 enzyme is blocked, inflammation, which causes arthritis, is reduced. Since the COX-2 enzyme does not play a role in the normal function of the stomach or intestinal tract, medications namely Celebrex, Vioxx, which selectively block COX-2, do not present the same risk of injuring the lining of the stomach or intestines.

The COX-2 inhibitor is now on the market in the form of a drug named Celecoxib, which is commonly known as Celebrex, Bextra, Naprosyn, Diclofenac and Ibuprofen. It is widely expected that COX-2 inhibitors will be of great value to people with arthritis and variety of pain conditions.

Bextra is an NSAID that exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. Bextra is a powerful medicine used for the treatment of the joint pain, and inflammation. It is also used for the relief of the stiffness of osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis caused by "wear and tear" on bones and joints, stiffness of adult rheumatoid arthritis which affects joint membranes, cartilage, and bones in the knee. It is also used for the patients faced with debilitating and chronic pain, associated with primary dysmenorrhea, which is commonly known as menstrual cramping.

Ibuprofen belongs to the class of propionic acid derivatives. It is a very effective analgesic, antipyretic with potent anti-inflammatory effects. When taken, it is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and peak concentrations are observed after one to two hours. It is widely distributed in the body. High concentration is achieved in the synovial fluid. It has plasma half-life of about two hours. It is excreted in urine as metobolites or their conjugates.
